Chicago kids build city of dreams in architecture project

CHICAGO — Chicago is perhaps most famous for its skyline and architecture, but it’s also home to the celebrated firms who designed those buildings from the ground up.

In Hyde Park, building a new vision of the future begins with those who will live it. Thirty mentors are serving as guides in a camp sponsored by the National Organization of Minority Architects’ Project Pipeline.

When the camp began four years ago, just seven kids came. This year, it’s 70.

The camp teaches the basics of building and planning to students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

From there these kids expand, to neighborhoods and finally, a city, after four intensive days of planning.
