FEMA Central Contractor Registration

As part of our ongoing efforts to assist with the "Rebuilding Efforts Along the Gulf Coast", we are asking our members to register with FEMA using the link provided

 http://www.ccr.gov

At this time, we are required to register with FEMA in order to be able to receive contracts for rebuilding work.  There is a possibility that this restriction may be lifted, but until then, please register!

Message from the President

September 5, 2005

NOMA Members and Friends

My fellow colleagues, today marks day seven of the evacuation of New Orleans. I still do not know the extent my personal losses. Perhaps personal possessions are nearly 100%. My house may be repairable; who knows at this time. Closure cannot occur until the unknown is known.

I have been blessed in knowing that all but one of my Hewitt-Washington & Associates staff is safe. The exception is my secretary, Kim Hugle. We have not heard from her and continue to pray that she is okay.

I have seen photographs of the office and it seems to be intact. It is however going to be difficult to gain access to the office in order to secure our electronic data. We usually back up our information in the event of an emergency, but in this case the storm shifted and intensified over the weekend and we did the smart thing...LEFT TOWN.

Strength in Numbers

NOMA is an outstanding organization and I am humbled to be at the helm. NOMA must continue to move forward. I am requesting that each member recruit a new member to strengthen our organization. As you are aware unity brings about strength. As architects who happen to be minority we must bind together in these troubled times to have a voice.

To the minority professionals across the country who have this "delusion of inclusion, I ask you to remember the scene of the less fortunate people in New Orleans. Those forced to live like occupants of
a third world country because they were unable to afford to evacuate. Maybe the silver lining is an opportunity for the talent in our organization to be finally recognized and utilized to the maximum.

The Board of Directors of NOMA are currently brainstorming ways to assist in the relief efforts for the city of New Orleans. We will be contacting members to solicit your participation shortly.

In closing, I would like to advise our young practitioners that your accomplishments will never be measured by your acquisition of material things, but by your contribution to society.

My favorite biblical scripture is in the New Testament, the book of Luke 6:35

"But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the highest."

Respectfully submitted this Labor Day

James R. Washington, Jr., NOMA President 2004- 2005
Vice President - Hewitt-Washington and Associates

Responses from NOMA Members and Friends

The response from the NOMA family has been tremendous. NOMA member firms; Turner & Associates located in Atlanta, Georgia; NOMA Regional Vice President David N. Kirk of DNK located in Cincinnati; Smith and Smith located in Chicago and others have offered assistance to my staff and to our firm in temporarily relocating our practice.

Hewitt-Washington & Associates will temporarily utilize Turner & Associates facilities due to the geographic location, although we are also considering Baton Rouge, LA as a possible site in the near future.

My Dear Brother President Washington:

My condolences to a Great City.  I know the spirit of your people and to the uplift of your firm, if you need some items to get you going, let me know.  I have some monitors (19) that I can donate and after going through my catalog library, I can send you any duplicates.  I may have a scanner that I can also donate to your cause.  But let me know how I can be of assistance.

There will be great opportunities when one starts from the beginning with knowledge.  Again, let's get going and anyway I can help, just let me know.  I hope to see you in Birmingham.

Sincerely yours,

Charles Grant Lewis

NOMA Hurricane Relief and Rebuild Efforts

Dear NOMA Colleague,

As many of you are aware, the NOMA Board has established a Rebuild Initiative in direct response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  We are asking for member firms to support our efforts to assist displaced architects as well as position ourselves to assist in the reconstruction of the Gulf Coast areas.  We are asking that member firms in support of these efforts to forward a 1-2 page data sheet/brochure (8 1/2"x 11", .doc or .pdf format) containing your company's contact information, types of work/specialties/expertise, volume of work, past clients, and other pertinent information so that it may be utilized as a resource for services needed in the rebuilding effort.  Please forward your data sheet to rebuildneworleans@noma.net as soon as possible.  Also, please send comments, suggestions, or notify us of any assistance that you are willing provide to displaced NOMA members and their families.   We are having discussions with other organizations including the Congressional Black Caucus to maximize our efforts.  NOMA is committed to working long-term toward the goal of bringing normalcy back to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast areas.  We appreciate your continued support.

Regards,

NOMA National Board 2005
