As we conclude Women’s History Month, I am struck by the sheer magnitude of the brilliance that defines the women of NOMA. You are far more than a statistic in the profession; you are the architects of change, the deans of innovation, and the relentless community impact makers who refuse to let the status quo stand. At 55%, you make up more than half our membership. From our dedicated chapter leaders and faculty members to the mentors pouring into the next generation and the mentees rising to meet them—you are not just honoring history; you are the future history makers of our industry.
To our women student members who may feel a sense of trepidation or discouragement amid the shifting political landscape and threats to the inclusive future of our profession: do not let the noise dim your light. Your presence in the studio and the classroom is, in itself, an act of courage and a declaration of your right to shape the world. Remember that the obstacles placed before you are a testament to the power you hold to dismantle them. Stay focused, stay rooted in your purpose, and know that NOMA stands as your shield and your advocate.
To my fellow women emerging professional members on the arduous journey toward licensure: the path to those initials behind our name is a marathon, not a sprint. Every hour of experience earned and every exam passed is a brick in the foundation of a legacy that will inspire those who follow us. Your persistence is the bridge between aspiration and authority. Do not grow weary; the finish line is in sight, and the profession is waiting for the unique perspective only you can provide. Do not let anyone deem you “nothing” because you are not yet licensed.
To the women who are licensed professionals currently standing at a crossroads, considering a career change or a new direction within the industry: transition is not a sign of failure, but a manifestation of growth. Whether you are pivoting toward advocacy, technology, or a completely new facet of design, trust the expertise you have cultivated. Your skills are transferable, your vision is valuable, and your evolution is necessary for a dynamic and resilient profession.
To the women of the NOMA Council, those who have anchored this organization for 20, 30, and even 40+ years: you are our living legacy. Your steadfast commitment has provided the shade under which we now grow. Thank you for your wisdom, your endurance through eras of profound challenge, and your willingness to guide us into this new chapter. You have shown us that longevity in this work is possible, and your mentorship remains the heartbeat of our collective success.
As we move forward, I challenge each of you to continue making history—not just in the archives of our profession, but within your families, your neighborhoods, and your firms. Whether you practice architecture, landscape design, interior design, or any of our allied disciplines, your work is a vital contribution to the human experience. Let us continue to build, to lead, and to advocate with intentionality. Happy Women’s History Month!
With gratitude and purpose,
